Church Museum
In the Parish of "Evangelistria" in Nafplio, there is an Ecclesiastical Museum housed in a new building made in 2023. The main collection consists of ecclesiastical objects dating back to the 18th and 19th century.. Portable icons form the core of the museum's collection and represent the most significant and extensive part, encompassing various categories. Among them are iconostasis icons (depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, the Twelve Feasts, Saints), devotional icons (intended for walls or personal worship), and icons of various sizes for private religious use. The collection also includes a wooden sculpted Cross from the 16th century.
Additionally, there is a collection of liturgical books (Gospels, Menologia, etc.), with most of them printed in well-known Venetian typographies of the 18th century. In the field of weaving, there are exquisitely embroidered pieces with gold, covers for the Holy Chalice. In the area of silversmithing, there is a series of gilded sacred vessels, candlesticks, etc. The thematic range of the icons covers the entire spectrum of Orthodox doctrinal hierarchy. There is a significant variety of established iconographic types of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and numerous saints, corresponding to the liturgical calendar and the hagiography of the Church, serving both for worship and liturgical use. The dedicatory inscriptions with the names of the dedicants and benefactors are of particular interest.
The Ecclesiastical Museum operates under the direct supervision of the Holy Temple of "Evangelistria." The exhibits cover the period from the 16th to the 20th century and serve as witnesses to the post-Byzantine ecclesiastical art of the region. The museum's purpose is to collect, preserve, conserve, exhibit, and promote all types of objects that showcase the ecclesiastical art of the Sacred Temple.
